“Do Doctrine” Believers
by Dan Lirette
John 7:16-17 “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”
All on sides of the denominational border we have Brethren claiming to be a part of this doctrinal camp and that doctrinal camp, not realizing that the Doctrine that most pleases our Heavenly Father is “Do Doctrine”… you know, doctrine that causes you to “do” rather than “spew”.
We have Calvinists, Arminians, Baptists, Pentecostals, Mennonites, Presbyterians, Charismatics, and on the list goes, all holding to one particular doctrine or another.
I admit it; I was guilty of the “I’m of this denomination/belief” at one time.
When I first started attending the church I am now a member of, the Pastor made it clear he’s not into denominational labels.
Yes, our church fellowship is part of a large denominational body, yet our Pastor is very clear that this doesn’t define us as a people.
Labels are like walls, they divide us.
Of course we must hold to the fundamentals of our Faith such as the Blood Atonement, Resurrection, etc etc… however, this is the belief of all true Children of God; none would deny these essential tenets of the Faith once delivered.
However, true Doctrine is “Do” Doctrine, as Jesus Himself so clearly made plain.
If we’re not “doing” the Will of God, we’ll find ourselves filled with confusion and all sorts of error, because we’re not doing what God asks of us by His Word and by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
“Do Doctrine” says, “I can write all the articles I want…I can quote all of the Scripture verses I want…I can teach and teach and teach… but unless I’m walking with Christ in obedience to His Word, all of my ‘doings’ are really ‘nothings’.”
How true!
Many times we find ourselves caught up in foolish debates and such things…. hopefully we can take a few lessons home from such experiences, namely, that at the end of the day I’ve accomplished nothing for the Kingdom of God as I’ve not allowed the Lord’s Grace to cause me to “do” the Will of God… rather, I was too busy arguing with others.
“Do Doctrine” gets up and gets going; it doesn’t sit idly by debating the points of Armianism vs Calvinism all month long… “Do Doctrine” presses on in the things of God, seeking the Lord in prayer, fasting and Biblical study and application… it doesn’t allow us to write with pen all day while refusing to take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, in order that we might trample down all that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.
Beloved, “Do Doctrine” doesn’t mean you set out to do the Will of God on your own… no! no! no! “Do Doctrine” is that which enables you to receive and apply the Grace of God to obey the Word of God in relation to what the Lord wants for your life.
Not sure what that consists of?
For starters, think of the poorest person you know of in your church or community….secretly buy that individual or family groceries and leave it at their doorstep.
Volunteer your time, energy and effort at a local foodbank or soup kitchen.
This is the Will of God, that we take care of the less fortunate among us.
This is “Do Doctrine”, Beloved, and this is the Doctrine that Chist Jesus is pleased with.
Notice the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:31-46
“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”
Notice here that when the Lord Jesus separates the sheep from the goats He’s not primarily looking at one’s intellectual doctrinal system… He’s looking at whether or not one was a doer of the word rather than merely a hearer only.
Jesus is coming back for a People who’s lives are marked by “Do Doctrine” rather than “Do Nothing Doctrine”.
Our Holy God has commissioned you and I to “do” His Will, and God has promised each of us His own Grace to accomplish this; we can lay no excuse at the doorstep of Christ for our own lack of doing.
Let all self effort be cast aside and let all self performance to gain approval from God be made null and void; simply let us do all things by the Power of the Holy Spirit through the Cross of Jesus Christ.
Let us be “Do Doctrine” Believers alone and let all of our intellectual reasonings concerning intellectual issues be laid to rest until we’ve found ourselves doing the Will of God.
