Three times in Scripture we find that the Lord warns His People in the strongest possible terms concerning those who turn back to sin and refuse to repent… these people, if they harden their hearts against the Spirit of God and do not repent, will reach a place where no more repentance is possible… they’ll ultimately blaspheme the Holy Spirit:
Hebrews 6:4-6 for [it is] impossible for those once enlightened, having tasted also of the heavenly gift, and partakers having became of the Holy Spirit, and did taste the good saying of God, the powers also of the coming age, and having fallen away, again to renew [them] to reformation, having crucified again to themselves the Son of God, and exposed to public shame. (Young’s Literal Translation)
Once a former Child of God blasphemes the Holy Spirit, there is no more sacrifice for sins, but only a fearful looking for of judgement and fiery indignation:
Hebrews 10:26-29 For we -- willfully sinning after the receiving the full knowledge of the truth -- no more for sins doth there remain a sacrifice, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment, and fiery zeal, about to devour the opposers; any one who did set at nought a law of Moses, apart from mercies, by two or three witnesses, doth die, of how much sorer punishment shall he be counted worthy who the Son of God did trample on, and the blood of the covenant did count a common thing, in which he was sanctified, and to the Spirit of the grace did despite? .(Young’s Literal Translation)
As well, the Lord warns us through His Servant Jude that those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit are twice dead, rooted up and are kept for darkness!
Jude 12-13 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. (King James Version)
All of this I personally experienced in a vision-type form, though I saw no vision, but experienced the place of Outer Darkness, as the Lord saw fit to reveal to me the seriousness of those claiming Christ and yet living lifestyles of wickedness.
God has graciously allowed me to be one who has not only read, but experienced, the Outer Darkness spoken of in Scripture reserved for those who have turned form the Lord.
Through this experience I’ve been granted a passion to reach out to the lost and backslidden alike, as well as the saved, to exhort them to continue in obedience to the Lordship of Jesus through the Power of the Holy Spirit.
This experience started approximately three years ago and periodically has taken place a handful more times after the initial experience.
It was so real that as I shared with my Pastor, I couldn't help but begin crying; it was absolutely terrifying.
Each time it’s happened, the experience has been the same.
Let me explain what the Lord allowed me to experience by sharing what I’ve tangibly experienced.
Waking up from a dead sleep in the middle of the night to thunder and lightening, I noticed that something was different…eerier…about the atmosphere.
What I was experiencing is what Scripture describes as Outer Darkness, and this Outer Darkness that I was engulfed in was the Outer Darkness that backsliders will experience who turn away from the Living God for sin, as Scripture makes clear this is where the unfaithful go:
Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (King James Version)
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (King James Version)
As I am in this cloud of darkness and abandonment, I was unsure if I was physically alive, and even though I could see all around me that I was in my home, I was in a spiritual atmosphere of death and eternal damnation.
What I experienced was also abandonment… it was as though I instinctively knew that God had left me and would not receive me and with this abandonment came a “knowing” that all hope was gone and lost, that there was no further hope of restoration to God.
I also knew, however, that God was present in the sense that He’s everywhere at one time, as Psalm 139:7-10 tells us that if we make our bed in Hell that God is also present even there, and yet while I was in this cloud of Outer Darkness, I knew that all hope of escaping this darkness was gone and that this darkness and abandonment was eternal.
There was absolutely no escape… none; I cannot stress how deep the “knowing” was… it was as though it was God giving this “knowing”… that He was making it absolutely clear that this Outer Darkness was complete, full and eternal.
Those who teach that a Believer can sin without consequence and only lose his reward in Heaven are teaching doctrines of devils without realizing it.
There is no basis in Scripture for such a doctrine, as Scripture clearly states that the soul that sins shall die.
Backsliders are in danger of blasphemy if they do not repent. With each wilful and deliberate sin comes a further hardening of one’s heart against the convicting Power of the Holy Spirit to the ultimate result of being cast out of the Kingdom of God forever, without Hope of Restoration.
No amount of prayer, laying on of hands or fasting will see the Blasphemer restored, as God has set His seal of reprobation on such a person.
The only safeguard is in the Blood of Jesus Christ, and a continual walking in the Light as He is in the Light; in this we shall be cleansed of all sin by the Blood.
