Why Hell?
Jim Wilson
Rhetorical question: a question asked merely for effect with no answer expected.
The person who asks the question thinks that the answer is in the question or that there is no legitimate answer to the question.
One of these questions I have heard for much of my adult life (a long time) is “How can a loving God send anyone to Hell?” “If He is loving, He cannot do it, or if anyone is in Hell, God is not loving.” This has been very effective. In other words people buy this line of reasoning.
Let me ask a rhetorical question, “How can a just God let anyone into Heaven?” If sinners are in Heaven then God is not just. If God is just then Heaven will be empty of people.
It turns out that this conundrum is solved because God is both very loving and very just.
But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26
People are in Hell because they reject the love of God and receive His justice. People are in Heaven because they receive the love of God because Jesus took the justice.
